The Twitter Farm

I'm a big Twitter user.  It's more entertaining and less time-consuming than Facebook.  Unfortunately, I came across this when reading through my feed this morning:

Here's the same pic, but includes the whole screen.  Click it to see that I don't follow HBO.  I should mention that I don't follow "36 Retweets" -- whoever that is, either:

It's a promoted tweet from HBO that was retweeted by "36 Retweets."  I don't follow either.  It also says "Promoted by HBO."  Maybe I'm misinterpreting this, but it looks like an advertisement has been inserted into my twitter feed.

I've also made a crudely drawn arrow that points to "Dismiss," which is the only time I've ever seen this option available for an individual tweet.

Has Twitter started inserting ads randomly into my feed?  Has it done so for you guys?  It's things like this that made me hesitant to get into social media in the first place -- that is when they sort of break the fourth wall and make you realize that you are the product and the advertisers are the customer.

  1. Nice observation.
Yep, that's how it works. These sites want to make a profit. They don't really care whether they alienate part of their userbase if it gets them bigger profits in the long run.

  3. TwitterCommunications announced a week ago or so that they are introducing a new sort of promoted tweets. Audi had a really nice promotion yesterday about #IwantanR8. Follow me on Twitter and I will reloffolw you.

  4. I think you should be more concerned about the girl of the first tweet (FriendfromHS). She doesn't seem like the brightest gal around.

And yep, twitter has already started introducing publicity in your timeline. We'll have to get used to that. Sooner or later they had to start monetizing (sp??) their business.

  9. It's a "promoted" tweet, they get paid to promote it. AdBlock takes fair and square care of it, though.

  13. I quit all social networks. Google is filtering information too. If we both google the same word, our google search results would be vastly different depending on the location we are in and the links we click (funny, political). I think that is horrible, for example I searched Egypt and got a bunch of travel companies, while when my friend searched Egypt, he got the protests. I don't think the internet is supposed to go down this route, information needs to be spread freely, and not filtered into what people like.

  17. Yeah, she is stupid. I think it's on purpose though, like she's trying to be like those dumb people you knew back in school...at least, I hope. She tweets the dumbest things throughout the day, but it's pretty funny. FriendfromHS is definitely worth a follow.
